ABOUT SAFARI 4

With all the talk of global sustainable development, one thing is clear – cities and public transit are the future! Sustainable development is not just about hi-tech solutions. It is also about recognizing and fostering the links between environment, health, commerce, land use practices and behaviors both human and animal. Who could imagine living a world of glassy towers without the birds that roost in the city? What would our public spaces be with out a richly textured animal and vegetal world?

SAFARI 4 is the second in a series of urban wildlife tours. The project began with SAFARI 7, a tour along New York City’s No. 7 line, in January 2009. After Beijing, the project will travel to other Columbia University locations throughout the world, from Sao Paolo to Mumbai, Amman, and Moscow.

Safari 4 is organized the Urban Landscape Lab at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation and the New York City-based graphic design firm MTWTF.

The URBAN LANDSCAPE LAB is an inter-disciplinary applied research group at the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, & Preservation focused on the role of design in urban ecosystems.
